Is There Any Real Issue Whether Gen. Joshua Chamberlain Ordered the 20th Maine Charge At Little Round Top?

Most historians will tell you that Col. (at the time) Chamberlain ordered a conference with his officers before the charge, it is possible that a few may have suggested a charge, but by the time that Lt. Melcher reached his line once again the order had already been given and the men were preparing for the attack. Some will say in the fury of battle Melcher ordered the charge and Chamberlain decided that had crossed the Rubicon and they had to go. The Order given by Chamberlain was given during a lull in the battle so it is completely possible that the order would have been heard. Of course you could also argue that it was given via telephone game method. Where he ordered one officer who ordered another down the line.
