Why do people like plays so much?

i just went to the oregon shakespear festival for a field trip we saw pride and predjudice and hamlet now i thought both plays were okay but i did not enjoy watching them. before we saw them we all read a synopsis on what would happen. To me since i read the synopsis it was extrfemely booring since i knew what was going to happen and very long. infact i fell asleep during both of them. can somebody please explain to me why people like watching plkays so much because i dont.
