What do you think of the Pope denouncing use of condoms and saying they make AIDS in Africa worse?
For a Roman Catholic, abstinence is the way to go. For your average person, condoms are the answer. In Africa things are completely different. Consider the statistics this article offered - 2/3 of the population is living with AIDS. Obviously this begins with unprotected , but in Africa there are also superstitions and beliefs which the Church cannot hope to compete with. It is believed that if you contract the AIDS virus, the only cure is to have with a virgin. This OF COURSE only spreads the disease further and infects younger and younger children (often through ). Unprotected also produces offspring, which in turn produces more children with HIV. It is a difficult problem and one in which misconceptions need to be addressed with clear education. How this would succeed over a population steeped deep in superstition is questionable.
